DIGGER Adam Hann-Byrd, Olympia Dukakis (1995, Paramount, PG, priced for rental) Digger (Little Man Tate's Hann-Byrd) is a sad little kid from a newly broken home, visiting his relatives on the Pacific Northwest coast. During one bittersweet October, he helps his aunt cope with the loss of her baby, accompanies his grandmother (Dukakis) on dates with a local widower (Leslie Nielsen), and befriends a sickly boy who talks to trees and imagines he can fly. This rite-of-passage film is as pretty as a postcard, and almost as quiet (qualities better appreciated on video). Digger's lyrically understated emotions are all the more affecting for the way they whisper. A small, shimmering gem. A-
