JUDY GARLAND: THE GOLDEN YEARS AT MGM

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genre: Musical

JUDY GARLAND: THE GOLDEN YEARS AT MGM (1995, MGM/UA, unrated, $124.98) Talk about an embarrassment of riches. Over the course of the five discs in this new box, you get eye-popping restored prints of three feature films (1946's The Harvey Girls, 1948's The Pirate, 1950's Summer Stock), plus 30 theatrical trailers, rare shorts, three musical outtakes, an audio interview with Girls director George Sidney, and -- most astonishing -- more than 60 alternate versions of Garland soundtrack numbers, many of which have been remixed into real stereo. If you're one of those folks who think Garland is to mainstream entertainment what Robert Johnson is to Delta blues, this set will blow you away, but even if you're Judy-agnostic, you'll be impressed by its breadth and technical wizardry.
