Credits

Rated: R; Genre: Action/Adventure; With: Armand Assante and Sylvester Stallone

The message flashes on screen: ''The world has changed.'' But from what we can see of Judge Dredd in its current teaser, the future looks kinda familiar. There's a hint of Star Wars in James Earl Jones' voice-over invocation, another dose in the legions of plastic-clad storm troopers, a bit of Blade Runner in the hellish cityscapes, and a touch of RoboCop in a death-dealing hunk o' junk that rears its head. What we don't get is star Sylvester Stallone as Dredd, a frontier-justice enforcer in the year 2205. Sure, there's a moment's long shot that shows him from the back, and that must be him under one visored helmet. But Disney spent a reported $65 million re-creating the English comic-book character's milieu, and since Dredd is the studio's July 7 antidote to Batman fever, the slick-as-Gotham set is what we get. No doubt a follow-up trailer will put its bankable star in focus. Then again, only two years ago a too-grim Stallone set some audiences laughing at the trailer for the similarly futuristic Demolition Man. Maybe Sly should leave the helmet on.
