The best-seller list has been pretty static for the last couple of months-and one thing many of these not-so-random titles have in common is their publisher, Random House. Rarely does a single publisher dominate the charts, but right now the venerable Newhouse-owned company has no fewer than 8 out of 20 books on the hardcover lists. Three of them are from the Random House imprint, one is from Ballantine, and four are from Knopf, including A Dog's Life, the latest Peter Mayle novel. Two more titles lurk just out of sight on the nonfiction list at No. 11 and No. 13. Weeks on FICTION List
