Details Lead Performance: John Prine

Prine has been top dog in the songwriting kennel for 25 years by balancing a bent worldview with heartbreaking detail. This follow-up to '91's Grammy-winning The Missing Years features six cuts by ace Nashville tunesmith Gary Nicholson, whose slick skills push Prine toward empty pop product. But when left on his own (''Lake Marie''), Prine can still pull heartstrings better than anyone.
