THE COMPANION Kathryn Harrold, Bruce Greenwood (1994, MCA/Universal, R, priced for rental) In the chilly high-tech future, it's harder than ever to find a good man. And it's especially tough for romance novelist Gillian Tanner (Harrold), whose men just never measure up to her fictional heroes. Then along comes Geoffrey (Exotica's Greenwood), an android who cooks, cleans, and chops wood on command. He's the perfect mate for a secluded mountaintop sabbatical...until Gillian starts overloading his personality program. Originally broadcast on the USA Network, this slow-burn thriller eventually builds to a menacing climax -- yet it's actually creepier and more compelling while exploring the most intimate moments of this woman/machine romance. B+
