DUEL AT DIABLO;HOUR OF THE GUN

DUEL AT DIABLO James Garner, Sidney Poitier HOUR OF THE GUN Garner, Jason Robards (1966/1967, MGM/UA, unrated, $69.98) Hour of the Gun, a starchily directed version of the Wyatt Earp saga, makes its wide-screen video debut in this double-feature set, but the real curiosity is Duel at Diablo, one of Garner's best '60s efforts. It's standard cavalry-versus-Apaches stuff, but its absence of frontier racism is surprisingly sophisticated: Not only are the Indians as human as everybody else, but the fact that Poitier's character is black, and in a position of authority, goes unremarked. The only fly in the ointment is the horrendously inappropriate score by Neal Hefti, which sounds like a warm-up for his work on TV's Batman. Both films: B
