Big Deal

Hyperion locks in a book deal for the story of a recently caught computer hacker

Hyperion will publish an account of the hunt for notorious hacker Kevin D. Mitnick, who broke parole in '92 and was recently nabbed on another infringement, with the help of computer whiz Tsutomu Shimomura — whose home system he dared to hack into. The publisher paid Shimomura and journalist John Markoff, who broke the story, $750,000 for the tale, due in 1996. Miramax has bought the movie rights.
