Getting a 'Toon Up

Drawing power: Music-video maestro Spike Jonze (Weezer's ''Buddy Holly'') moves to the big screen with his version of the childhood fave Harold and the Purple Crayon. Maurice Sendak, author of a few childhood faves himself, is set to design the animation and produce.

Monkey business: Paul Reubens (a.k.a. Pee-wee Herman) goes back to the movies in Dunston Checks In to bag an orangutan at large in a posh hotel. Now shooting, the comedy costars Jason Alexander, Rupert Everett, Faye Dunaway, and a couple of apes named Sam and Jerry.

No, it's not The Chubby Checker Story: Twister is Speed director Jan De Bont's new whirligig, starring Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, and Cary Elwes as tornado scientists. Filming of the Michael and Anne-Marie Crichton script starts this month in Oklahoma, home of the real thing.
