The Boston foursome The Dirt Merchants disguises traditional pop smarts beneath dissonant squalls on Scarified. On ''Love Apnea'' a bottle cap scrapes metallic tones from a guitar, while breathy vocals exude sexual tension. Other cuts verge on being catchy despite self-immolating feedback and maniacal distortion. B+
