The self-obsessed painter almost defies knee-jerk Julian Schnabel-bashers with Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud, a confessional album of spacey musical Americana. Almost. There's an appealing lack of control to his vocalizing, a willing display of vulnerability that recalls a poor man's Dylan, circa New Morning. But when he sings ''I thought everybody in the world wanted to be me,'' his honesty approaches the grotesque. B-
