Let's face it, you could compile an A-grade Marvin Gaye collection just by gathering his singles and correctly spelling the titles. But The Master:1961-1984 is exceptional: four discs that go for the chart-toppers while mixing in astute B sides and obscurities. Producer Amy Herot was shrewd enough to lead off the fourth CD with Gaye's most undulating rhythm, ''Got to Give It Up — Pt. 1'' and to include his still-staggering 1983 live version of the national anthem. A+
