Lead Performance: Marvin Gaye
A+
Let's face it, you could compile an A-grade Marvin Gaye collection just by gathering his singles and correctly spelling the titles. But The Master:1961-1984 is exceptional: four discs that go for the chart-toppers while mixing in astute B sides and obscurities. Producer Amy Herot was shrewd enough to lead off the fourth CD with Gaye's most undulating rhythm, ''Got to Give It Up Pt. 1'' and to include his still-staggering 1983 live version of the national anthem. A+
