Cowriter-director Tomas Gutierrez Alea's Up to a Certain Point is both short (a mere 70 minutes) and bittersweet, telling the story of a screenwriter (Oscar Alvarez) who meets a female worker on Havana's docks (Mirta Ibarra) while researching a new project on machismo in Cuban males. What with the movie's unhurried pace and the vibrant Ibarra, it's the perfect moony romance to rent on a summer's night. The banal ending, however, proves that even communism can be as corny as Hollywood. B
