The Police's Live! two-CD set affords a chance to reassess the new-wave reggae and punk-pop of the blond-mopped trio. Of the two concerts here, the 1979 performance is rawer and edgier, while the '83 show finds them at the top of their game, mixing later material like ''Synchronicity'' with crowd-pleasers like ''Message in a Bottle.'' Compare the radically different versions of ''Roxanne'' and ''Can't Stand Losing You'' to hear how they stretched the simplest songs into new shapes. While disdaining Sting (and the pretension that came to full fruition in his solo career) is understandable, liking the Police is no crime. B+
