Death and the Maiden

Details With: Ben Kingsley and Sigourney Weaver

Both tendencies show in this version of the stage play Death and the Maiden set in a South American country where democracy has just been restored. Intelligent and economical, the movie lacks only an emotional center. Seen in the context of Polanski's previous work, it's oddly bloodless and just as oddly compelling. B-
