Satan's Brew

MPAA Rating: Unrated
EW's GRADE

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genres: Comedy, Foreign Language; With: Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Still outrageous after all these years, Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Satan's Brew plays like a Teutonic version of an early John Waters movie. This farce about a blocked, demented writer (Kurt Raab) who thinks he's the reincarnation of the 19th-century gay poet Stefan George, is rich, dark burlesque — a ferocious assault on conventional mores, as well as a portrait of the artist as an obsessed, deluded pig. What's screamingly funny about Satan's Brew, aside from Raab's frantic performance, are the ultra-kinky sex scenes. Fassbinder never again made as subversive — and sublimely silly — a movie as this one. A-
