This engrossing sci-fi adventure comes packed onto three discs that might as well be labeled Myst, Doom, and The 7th Guest. From the first, you get Maabus' lush, mysterious-island setting; from the second, nasty beasties that pop up in your path at the worst possible times; and from the third, navigable video, which tech wonks will recognize as the effect that makes you feel as if you're moving in a 3-D environment. All this may sound like a recipe for Frankenstein's monster, but Maabus is actually an impressive piece of digital alchemy and it's just as addictive as any of its inspirations. A-
