IF MONKS HAD MACS... (Voyager, CD-ROM for Mac, $34.95) Imagine the loose files and scraps of paper found in a drawer of your philosophy professor's desk and you'll have an idea of what this curious title is like. The 24 wildly diverse programs on the disc range from a detailed analysis of Bruegel's masterpiece The Tower of Babel, to an interactive essay on the White Rose Nazi-resistance movement, to the complete texts of The Scarlet Letter and the Warren Commission report. Quizzical as it is, Monks proves strangely engrossing, in a pleasantly scattershot sort of way. And its two silliest features, a haiku generator and a hip-hop sound mixer, are darn near addictive. B+
