Imagine the loose files and scraps of paper found in a drawer of your philosophy professor's desk and you'll have an idea of what the curious If Monks Had Macs... is like. The 24 wildly diverse programs on the disc range from a detailed analysis of Bruegel's masterpiece The Tower of Babel, to an interactive essay on the White Rose Nazi-resistance movement, to the complete texts of The Scarlet Letter and the Warren Commission report. Quizzical as it is, Monks proves strangely engrossing, in a pleasantly scattershot sort of way. And its two silliest features, a haiku generator and a hip-hop sound mixer, are darn near addictive. B+
