An uncommonly well-conceived collection, The Pied Piper, 1934-1940 gathers the legendary trumpeter Bunny Berigan's outstanding performances with his own band and also with Tommy Dorsey, Gene Gifford, Frankie Trumbauer, and Benny Goodman. Berigan's unique sound warm, dark, and vital is captured better here than on previous CDs, and Richard Sudhalter's liner notes are lyrical. But how could the producers have left out ''East of the Sun''? A
