Bette of Roses (1995)

EW's GRADE

Details Release Date: Jul 18, 1995; Lead Performance: Bette Midler; Genre: Pop

Is Midler going through a midlife crisis? Though her pipes are as glorious as ever, the brassy bravado and cheering chutzpah that once defined the Divine Miss M. are nowhere in evidence on Bette of Roses. She's now singing pathetically about ''how I want to deserve you...I'm weak.'' Bette Midler weak? Get a grip, girl! No one is going to buy it. Despite an engaging opener and absolutely killer closer (both songs tinged with nostalgia, her forte), the rest of this long-awaited CD is surprisingly limp. B-
