Kids might not make it to your local mall this summer now that Miramax has lost its appeal with the MPAA to overturn the NC-17 rating on Larry Clark's controversial drama. The distributor is releasing Kids unrated through its Excalibur Films. Although theater owners may admit children under 17 to an unrated film, some of the 25 art houses that will start showing Kids over the next week will treat it as if it were NC-17 -- and admit no one under 17.
Excalibur's CEO, Eamonn Bowles, is so far unfazed. ''It's not ideal, but it's better than you would have if it were NC-17,'' he says, acknowledging that many theaters won't show NC-17 movies. ''There's a little more room for interpretation -- not just with letting kids in, but to be able to play the film at all.'' Still, while Miramax reaps publicity from its latest ratings hoopla (remember Clerks?), there's the irony that teens the same age as Kids' characters might have to wait and catch it on video.
