The Day the Earth Stood Still: Special Edition

Though it's obviously made from foam rubber, cardboard, and silver spray paint, the inscrutable face of Gort, the 8-foot-tall interstellar policeman, still beats anything in RoboCop or Judge Dredd for sheer scare power. It's only the new, supplemental material for The Day the Earth Stood Still: Special Edition that sometimes feels B-movie chintzy. A narration track by director Robert Wise and amateurish interviews offer fun tidbits (can you imagine Spencer Tracy in the Michael Rennie role?) but hardly justify the stratospheric prices. B
