Time Without Pity (1995)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Movie Rated: R; Genres: Drama, Mystery and Thriller; With: Michael Redgrave and Ann Todd

This British beat-the-clock psychodrama puts you inside the addled head of an alcoholic dad (Michael Redgrave) desperate to save his son (Alec McCowen) from execution for murder. We're shown at the start that the lad didn't do it, which leaves director Joseph Losey free to eschew suspense. He revels instead in expressionist excess: The camera whips this way and that over an assemblage of helpless, tortured souls. In theaters, Time Without Pity must have pounded like a hangover. Served at home, it's a bracing shot of pure style. B+
