This sci-fi frolic used Harlan Ellison's novella to set the template for the postapocalyptic landscape later popularized by The Road Warrior. A 24-year-old Don Johnson stars as a scavenger sharing a telepathic bond with a gleefully sarcastic dog, who tutors the young man while seeking out women for him to ravish. Though the film may not have one decent character, A Boy and His Dog (rereleased after a six-year moratorium) manages to be a likable celebration of friendship among the ruins.
