When it was released on July 18, Selena's posthumous album, Dreaming of You, sold about 175,000 copies -- in one day. So, not surprisingly, the late tejano star's album enters the pop chart at No. 1, selling a total of 331,000 copies during its first week and just missing Janet Jackson's 1993 record for biggest first-week sales (350,000) by a female artist. It's such big news that it diminishes the other major chart action of the week: the No. 2 debut of new jack swingers Jodeci and Canadian alterna-diva Alanis Morissette's entry into the top 10.
