A boy (Hal Scardino) becomes chummy with magical visitors -- toy figurines that, when unlocked from a wooden cupboard, turn into pocket-size people. What saves the film from an overdose of twinkles is the mix of director Frank Oz's appreciation of the non sequiturs of enchantment; Melissa Mathison's adultly funny script; and the least Hollywood-egenic cast in ages.
