The Val Lewton Collection (1995)

MPAA Rating: Unrated

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genre: Mystery and Thriller

Between 1942 and 1946, producer Val Lewton supervised the nine low-budget chillers anthologized on the six-laserdisc Val Lewton Collection. Thanks to the films' moody, noirish look and horrors suggested rather than shown, they've long and deservedly been considered classics transcending their lowly B-picture origins. Among the best of the bunch (i.e., the most original) are probably The Seventh Victim (devil worship in Greenwich Village) and I Walked With a Zombie (Jane Eyre transposed to 20th-century Haiti), but all provide literate frissons galore, especially in Image's crisp transfers. Further reasons to be cheerful: an informative extra audio track interview with The Body Snatcher director Robert Wise, and the first video appearance of The Ghost Ship, unseen since its original release.
