Writer-director Atom Egoyan delights in Chinese puzzles; witness last spring's kinky Exotica. The similarly convoluted Calendar documents the disintegration of a marriage between a cerebral photographer (Egoyan) and his earthy wife (Arsinée Khanjian) while on a photo shoot in Armenia. An emotional mystery, Calendar slowly reveals the sequence of small events that tore the couple apart. It also slyly turns the viewer into a voyeur, as Egoyan's character spends considerable time obsessively watching video footage of their trip, searching for evidence of the growing intimacy between his wife and the Armenian guide (Ashot Adamian) with whom she fell in love. But don't expect a conclusion that neatly ties it all together — it's the peeling away of the layers that makes Calendar so hypnotically satisfying. B+
