Tom & Viv (1995)

MPAA Rating: PG-13
EW's GRADE
B+

Details Movie Rated: PG-13; Genre: Drama; With: Willem Dafoe and Miranda Richardson

Within the author of such controlled yet wrenching poems as The Waste Land beat a heart of pure...ice. That is the revelation in Tom & Viv, in which the story of T.S. Eliot's marriage to Vivien Haigh-Wood is unrolled in all its genteel grotesqueness. That the great poet had a despicable side is well known; that he was also wretched to his ailing but devoted wife demonstrates anew that art is separate from life. It is not possible to like Willem Dafoe, so well does he inhabit Eliot, and it becomes imperative to sympathize with the superb Miranda Richardson, because so few came to her character's aid. Wait for the appropriate day on which to watch such a movie: under a gloomy, steel sky. B+
