This time Walt Disney Co. chairman Michael Eisner did it by hiring Creative Artists Agency chairman Michael Ovitz, 48, as president of the new conglomerate.... Warner Bros. Records seemed to complete its housecleaning with the Aug. 14 replacement of chairman and CEO Danny Goldberg, 45, with Warner executive Russ Thyret, 50. Goldberg was allied with ousted executive Doug Morris, champion of the now politically sensitive gangsta rap label Interscope.
Species star Natasha Henstridge, 22, and actor Damian Chapa, 32, will tie the knot on Aug. 26 in Los Angeles.
Life in the fast lane might be a thing of the past for scandal-plagued Hugh Grant. On Aug. 11 in Devon, England, the actor, 34, pleaded guilty to speeding. He had been clocked doing 98 mph in a 70-mph zone on April 29. Grant paid a 120-pound fine (roughly $200) and is now on the verge of losing his license because of earlier convictions for speeding and drunken driving. A spokesman for the actor has no comment.
The family of Scott Amedure filed a $25 million suit against The Jenny Jones Show and Warner Bros. on Aug. 14 in Oakland County, Mich., alleging that the syndicated talk show's negligence was responsible for Amedure's death. During the March 6 taping of the show, Amedure admitted to a ''same-sex crush'' on fellow guest Jonathan Schmitz. Three days later, Amedure was murdered, allegedly by Schmitz, who is in jail awaiting trial. ''[The defendants] should have known that by their conduct and false representations...[they] would and/or could incite [Schmitz] to violence,'' the suit states. On Aug. 15, a Warner spokeswoman said the company had yet to receive the filing but that ''the allegations we have read in the newspapers are baseless.''
After 14 years of marriage, Kimberlea Jones, 37, filed for divorce from Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones, 48, on Aug. 15 in San Antonio. According to the papers, ''the marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities.'' The couple's children, Austin Leonard, 12, and Victoria Kafka, 3, are currently living with their mother. The actor has no comment.
