Spike Lee may be a star director, but that doesn't mean he has star appeal at the box office. Witness his gritty urban drama Clockers: It earned the filmmaker some of the best reviews of his career and optimistically opened on more screens than any previous Lee effort. But lacking a marquee star, it did less than half the first-weekend business of 1992's Malcolm X, which had the benefit of Denzel Washington's considerable drawing power. In fact, Clockers' per-screen average fell well below the opening figures posted by 1990's Mo' Better Blues and 1991's Jungle Fever.
