A collaboration between cult faves Vic Chesnutt and Widespread Panic, brute. could be seen as the indie version of Neil Young and Pearl Jam. But because brute. is more an equal partnership than a council of grunge avatar and acolyte, they beat the rock giants at their own game. Each reins in past excesses, producing Nine High a Pallet, a compelling, rollicking disc. A-
