Empire Records (1995)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Various Artists; Genres: Rock, Soundtracks

The Empire Records soundtrack has fifteen tracks, split between two genres. There's alternative lite, as represented by Gin Blossoms' cheesy but brain-implanting ''Til I Hear It From You.'' More welcome is the heartfelt punk-pop of Cracker on ''Whole Lotta Trouble'' and the Martinis' (with ex-Pixies Joey Santiago and Dave Lovering) surprisingly melodic ''Free.'' A daring disc with its three unsigned bands. B+
