Restrained, uptight prep school instructor Andrew Crocker-Harris (convincingly played by Finney) is being forced out of his job. Resentful wife Laura (the staid Scacchi) can barely contain her anger or her hormones: She's been sleeping with the American chemistry teacher (Matthew Modine). Even in crisis, as he faces his barren life, Crocker-Harris can hardly let down his guard enough to communicate except for one tearful scene with a student (Ben Silverstone). Otherwise, so little happens in the The Browning Version's 97 minutes that you needn't worry about missing much during trips to the fridge. C+
