Repeating the box office performance of Legends of the Fall's first weekend in wide release, New Line Cinema's Pitt-driven thriller Seven grossed nearly $14 million with a winning combination of action, violence, and deadly sins that handily beat Showgirls' skin, sex, and skin. While Showgirls bested Seven's per-screen average and proved that an NC-17 picture can open in more than 1,000 theaters to solid big-city numbers, harsh reviews and bad buzz may pull the controversial nudie's legs out from under it.
