The premiere of Steven Bochco's Murder One smote its rivals, finishing an impressive 16th. But the ABC drama may get killed starting Oct. 12, when it moves to Thursdays against ER (2nd). NBC's Thursday lineup took five of the top six slots, including boffo debuts for Caroline in the City (5th) and The Single Guy (6th). A former resident of that night, Mad About You, had a smashing season opener on Sunday, placing 12th (just behind the premiere of Tony Danza's new ABC sitcom, Hudson Street). Meanwhile, on Fright Night (a.k.a. Friday), Fox's The X-Files (21st) scared up its biggest audience ever, and CBS' American Gothic premiered semi-promisingly in 54th. Other new series showing strength: CBS' Can't Hurry Love (26th), NBC's JAG (40th), ABC's The Drew Carey Show (41st), and Fox's Space: Above and Beyond (48th).
