The whole obsessive-fan-turned-slasher genre has been well nigh exhausted. Still, the straight-to-tape thriller Number One Fan manages to skirt utter predictability by cutting between the main story (about the stalking of an action star and his girlfriend) and a film within the film, which adds to the amusement by being even schlockier than the real movie. Director Jane Simpson demonstrates her healthy affection for B movies by casting trash stalwarts Dick Miller and Mary Woronov and by her flair for the bizarre such as the scene in which a bride gets beaten over the head with a mannequin arm.
