Hat trick or treat: That may be the best way to describe Casper, which, after scaring up more than $100 million in theaters, has become a hit two more times, debuting at the top of both the sales and rentals charts. (It's the first movie to do so since Forrest Gump five months ago.) Casper's video success was no doubt helped along by the title's cross promotions with Pepsi and Baskin-Robbins.
Like Casper, the week's other new movies had tape debuts that were directly proportional to their theatrical grosses: No. 5 Tommy Boy raked in $32.7 million; No. 7 Rob Roy took in $31.4 million; and bubbling under the top 10, No. 12 Friday made $27.9 million, and No. 18 Village of the Damned earned $8.6 million.
