Bill Frisell: Live (Gramavision) This wayward jazz guitar avatar never takes the straightest route between two points, bless him, but neither does he sneer at his all-American sources, John Hiatt and Sonny Rollins included. Frisell's first live album, recorded in '91, works as a retrospective of his inspired fringe activity. It also showcases the looseness of his playing-as well as that of bassist Kermit Driscoll and drummer Joey Baron, the critical two thirds of this quirkily artful band. B+
