It was a red-letter day for Green Day as the neo-punkers' second major-label effort, Insomniac, entered the charts at a very lucid No. 2. Slightly sleepier was the No. 4 entry of Janet Jackson's greatest-hits collection, Design of a Decade 1986/1996, which most industry spin-sters had figured would enter at the top spot. That meant Mariah Carey claimed the early-round edge in this anticipated battle of the divas, holding on to No. 1 for a second week. Alanis Morissette and Reba McEntire also had reason to celebrate: Though they were knocked down a notch or two in chart positioning, both actually registered sales increases.
