A washed-up cop (Edward James Olmos) takes a job watching over a schizophrenic (Sean Young), which gives them just enough time to fall in love before her sudden violent death. This is, of course, the kind of setup that would immediately have any good cop remembering Vertigo, but Olmos' character doesn't even seem to own a television set. At least the filmmakers don't try to keep the staged murder a secret from the audience; this allows viewers to enjoy Mirage's contrived plotting without having their intelligence insulted. Ultimately, all this convolution leads to a cliffside climax so amusingly absurd it's worth the rental fee. B-
