Liberman, former editorial director of the Condé Nast magazine empire, is a gifted photographer, and his black-and-white portraits are lovely. But what makes these images riveting is the intimacy that Liberman brings to his subjects: Marlene Dietrich, Jasper Johns, and Helen Frankenthaler, for example, are counted among his friends, and it shows in their spontaneous, relaxed poses.
