Then: Alexander Liberman Photographs 1925—1995

Liberman, former editorial director of the Condé Nast magazine empire, is a gifted photographer, and his black-and-white portraits are lovely. But what makes these images riveting is the intimacy that Liberman brings to his subjects: Marlene Dietrich, Jasper Johns, and Helen Frankenthaler, for example, are counted among his friends, and it shows in their spontaneous, relaxed poses. Even more tender are the photographs of the late Tatiana, his beloved second wife of 50 years, and of Melinda, his third wife.
