Using every trick in the movie-marketing book -- from music videos and infomercials to a BMW tie-in -- MGM/UA has successfully resuscitated ol' 007, catapulting Goldeneye to a spectacular $26.2 million debut. Pierce Brosnan's born-again Bond surpassed the opening weekend grosses of the last two Bond flicks combined. Goldeneye not only leapfrogged the previous MGM record setter (Rocky IV), but broke the momentum of Ace Ventura (it still collected $65 million in 10 days) and blunted the arrival of The American President, which scored a solid opening nonetheless. Like its villainess, Goldeneye landed Onatopp.
