As long as writer-director Hal Hartley kept his sensibilities trained on the deadpan passions of Long Island, movies like The Unbelievable Truth and Trust clicked. But Amateur is Hartley's attempt to go big time, with continental stars like Isabelle Huppert (Entre Nous) and Elina Lowensohn (Schindler's List) and a desultory suspense plot that involves an ex-nun (Huppert), an amnesiac pornographer (Martin Donovan), and a much-sought computer disc. On video, this plays like a 1960s Godard film badly translated into English — sad proof that Hartley's droll pretensions are outstripping his considerable skill. C-
