Fete the Beatles, the media demanded -- and we dutifully acceded, flooding stores and giving their Anthology 1 the year's best first-week sales figures by a long shot. SoundScan clocked the double disc's sales at 855,000 copies, while hundreds of thousands more reportedly sold through supermarkets, discounters, and other nonmusic chains that don't report to SoundScan. Though nearly eclipsed by his label mates, Garth Brooks also roped himself a bodacious debut -- promising Capitol's parent company, EMI, just the kind of fourth quarter it needs if rumors of its going up for sale next year are true.
