ELVIS PRESLEY Walk a Mile in My Shoes: The Essential 70's Masters (RCA) The last of RCA's chronological Elvis sets aims to persuade us that the King was still vital during his infamous Lost Years. The five discs are educational: Before his descent into slothville, Elvis got it up long enough to record swampy romps and fine country covers. But even though the liner notes make a convincing case that El's penchant for maudlin ballads was an outlet for post-Priscilla depression, that doesn't mean morose renditions of ''My Way'' or ''The Impossible Dream'' are essential. He sang them better than, say, Bobby Vinton, but schmaltz is schmaltz. B-
