The five discs are educational: Before his descent into slothville, Elvis got it up long enough to record swampy romps and fine country covers. But even though the liner notes make a convincing case that El's penchant for maudlin ballads was an outlet for post-Priscilla depression, that doesn't mean morose renditions of ''My Way'' or ''The Impossible Dream'' are essential. He sang them better than, say, Bobby Vinton, but schmaltz is schmaltz. B-
