WHEN THE Jim Carrey comedy The Mask became a blockbuster last year, New Line Cinema giddily made plans for a sequel. But don't hold your breath for the tentatively titled Revenge of the Mask. Last week, Hollywood's $20 million man began shooting the black comedy Cable Guy with Matthew Broderick. He'll then jump into Universal's Liar, Liar; and after that, he'll take on a more serious role in Peter Weir's The Truman Show. New Line now says Revenge won't reach screens until Christmas 1997. ''It's a priority for [Carrey], and for us,'' insists a spokesman for New Line, which took out a trade ad in 1994 saying it would exercise its option for Carrey to redon the mask. But Carrey's manager Jimmy Miller has a different take: ''Right now, we're waiting for the script. Jim's contract on The Mask had no option for a sequel, so it will be a brand-new deal.''
