Two '90s Badlands types hitch a ride with a couple of too-hip art types (David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes) who are wouldn't you know it doing a book about murder in America. While often pretentious (Pitt's killer character is named Early Grayce, hoo boy!) and philosophically dubious, Kalifornia is absorbingly stylish; you've never seen crumbling Americana framed in shots so beautifully. Director Dominic Sena served his apprenticeship making music videos, which might explain how he could imagine a nowheresville redneck bar that has avant-garde rockers Pere Ubu on the jukebox.
