The Miami-based Mavericks abandon social commentary for the thrill and devastation of high-stakes romance. Lead singer-songwriter Raul Malo augments his honky-tonk repertoire on What a Crying Shame (MCA) with gems from Bruce Springsteen and Jesse Winchester, but he also unveils two stunning originals: ''I Should Have Been True'' and ''The Things You Said to Me.'' No other band in contemporary country so ambitiously integrates '50s and '60s sounds into such a modern statement. B+
