Is it Japan-bashing to say this album's rhythm section of Tokyo-based musicians (pianist Yutaka Shiina, bassist Tomoyuki Shima, and drummer Masahiko Osaka) replicates the sound of mid-'50s jazz with admirable precision but little feeling or originality? Nope: American guest soloists Hargrove and Hart regurgitate the bop argot with exactly the same icy reverence.
